POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SPACE DRAWINGS.
Project Description
We are going to explore positive and negative space using an object from our house that has an interesting shape to it. It should have some movement to it, like a pair of scissors, a wrench, pliers, roll of tape, etc. A pencil can work too, but it might not be the most fun to trace or give you the best results in our final images. We are going to create two pieces of positive/negative space art this week, one where you color or shade in the positive space, like the blue in the image above and a second drawing where you color or shade the negative space.
Essential Question:
How do we use space when we create an image?
Skills and Vocabulary:
Positive Space- The space an object or thing takes up in a plane.
Negative Space- This is the space around or seen through any openings in an object. for example the holes for your fingers in a pair of scissors is considered negative space as well as the space around the scissors.
Activity:
Take a look at the activity/directions below and complete two drawings where you trace an object in your house repeatedly with overlapping in some places. Then with one drawing, students should color in the positive space in the first drawing and the negative space in the second while leaving the opposing space the white of the paper.
